Persévérez pour des soins rapides et appropriés
La première étape de la détection du cancer du sein consiste à consulter un médecin pour obtenir une mammographie, ce qui peut potentiellement empêcher une tumeur de se propager.
Malgré cela, la survivante du cancer du sein Leanna Blanchard, PT, DPT, OCS, qui avait 28 ans lorsqu'elle a ressenti une bosse dans son sein droit pour la première fois, s'est fait dire qu'elle devait attendre un mois pour voir un médecin.
«Cela ne me semblait pas juste de devoir attendre, mais je ne savais pas comment faire remonter la situation. Je me suis douté de la gravité de cette bosse », explique Blanchard, un spécialiste certifié en physiothérapie orthopédique, dont les patients comprennent des personnes touchées par le cancer du sein.
Blanchard a finalement consulté un médecin, mais lorsqu'une mammographie et une échographie ont été ordonnées, elle a dû attendre un mois de plus pour les obtenir - ce qui a finalement abouti à un diagnostic.
«J'aurais aimé avoir regardé d'autres cliniques locales qui auraient peut-être pu m'accueillir plus tôt», dit-elle. "Il est peu probable que les 2 mois que j'ai passés entre la recherche de la masse et le diagnostic aient fait une différence dans la façon dont j'ai été traité, mais je me demanderai toujours si cela aurait pu."
Faire face aux obstacles aux soins est frustrant, mais nous avons tous le droit d'avoir accès à un médecin de qualité en cas de besoin.
«Il peut être très difficile de plaider pour vous-même et de faire pression pour ce dont vous avez besoin, mais il vous suffit de ne jamais abandonner. Faites confiance à votre corps - vous le savez mieux », dit Blanchard.
Considérez un deuxième avis

Demandez de l'aide à vos proches de confiance
Les proches peuvent vous aider dans votre parcours d'auto-représentation.
«Parfois, vous ne pourrez peut-être pas vous souvenir de tout ce qui est dit. Donc, deux paires d'oreilles, c'est bien, plus un cahier », explique Joy Tassillio, une survivante du cancer du sein qui est en rémission depuis près d'un an et demi.
La présence d’un ami ou d’un membre de la famille aux rendez-vous chez le médecin peut alléger le fardeau d’obtenir autant d’informations, en particulier lors des premiers rendez-vous.
D'un autre côté, avoir quelqu'un dans la pièce peut limiter votre agence personnelle s'il a une personnalité plus extravertie ou s'il est enclin à parler pour vous.

Avec l'aide de son mari, une communauté soudée et le temps de réfléchir, Lewis a choisi l'option qui convenait le mieux à son parcours: une mastectomie bilatérale avec reconstruction.
«En fin de compte, tout le monde doit faire ce qu'il estime être bon pour lui», dit-elle. «Le chemin a été long, mais je ne regrette pas ma décision.»
Poser des questions peut également vous aider à naviguer parmi les options de traitement qui ne vous conviennent pas, ajoute Tassillio. On lui a conseillé d'essayer la chimiothérapie, mais elle a finalement choisi de ne pas la faire.

«Si vous êtes incertain, obtenez un deuxième ou même un troisième avis, mais battez-vous pour votre vie, car nous n'en avons qu'un», dit-elle. «Écoutez votre corps, n’ignorez pas les épaules, même si on vous dit que vous allez bien. Personne ne sait comment ou ce que vous ressentez à l'intérieur sauf vous.
